A UAE summer is hard on everything left in a pickup. Surfaces in direct sun get far hotter than the air, dust gets into everything, and a load left in an open bed is an easy target. If your tools are your living, a few habits protect them, and your budget.
Heat: what suffers most
- Lithium-ion batteries for power tools lose life when stored hot, and the manufacturer's storage temperature is often well below a summer truck bed. Bring them into the cab or indoors where you can.
- Aerosols, gas cartridges and fuel can be dangerous in high heat. Follow the label, keep them shaded and never leave them in a closed, sun-baked space.
- Electronics and test meters belong in padded cases, in the shade.
- Sealants, adhesives and paints can spoil. Check the storage temperature on the tin.
- Plastic cases and cool boxes fade and get brittle in constant sun.
Shade and cover
Park in the shade when you can, and use a bed cover or canopy if you carry tools every day. Even a light-coloured cover reduces the heat reaching the bed. Keep the hottest-sensitive items towards the front of the bed, where a canopy usually gives the most shade.
Dust and sand
Keep tools in closed cases rather than loose, and close lids before driving. Wipe down and blow out power tools regularly, especially vents and chucks.
Stop damage on the move
Heat makes plastic cases softer and easier to crack when they slide and hit each other. Give every case its own place: a modular organizer like Gripteck lets you plug blockers into the bed mat tight against each case, so nothing slides or knocks together, and you can change the layout in seconds.
Theft
- Don't leave valuable tools in an open bed when you're away from the truck.
- Use a lockable tool chest or a locking bed cover for anything that stays in the truck.
- Mark or engrave your tools, and keep a list with serial numbers.
- Unload expensive kit overnight.
A quick daily routine
- Batteries and electronics in the cab or indoors.
- Cases closed, blocked in place and in the shade.
- Nothing flammable left in direct sun.
- Valuables locked or unloaded.
