Buying a bed mat, organizer, liner or cover starts with one number: your bed length. Pickups of the same model can come with different beds, so measuring is the only way to be sure. It takes a minute and a tape measure.
Why the model name isn't enough
Most full-size pickups are sold with two or three bed lengths, often called short, standard and long. A double cabin usually has a shorter bed than a single cabin of the same model. Gripteck's GMC, Ford, Chevrolet and Toyota Tundra kits, for example, come in up to three bed lengths per trim, from about 5 ft to 8 ft.
Measure the length in 3 steps
- Close the tailgate. The bed length runs from the front wall of the bed, behind the cab, to the inside of the closed tailgate.
- Measure along the floor, down the middle of the bed. Don't measure along the top of the bed rails: they are often longer or shorter than the floor.
- Write it down in one unit. Centimetres, inches or feet and inches all work, as long as you're consistent.
Width, if you need it
For a mat or organizer, the important widths are at the floor: wall to wall, and between the wheel wells. The wheel wells are the narrowest point, and many products, including Gripteck kits, are designed to fit between them.
Common mistakes
- Measuring with the tailgate open, which adds the tailgate to the length.
- Measuring along the bed rail instead of the floor.
- Measuring with a liner, mat or toolbox in place that changes the real floor size.
- Guessing from the brochure: trims and cab styles change the bed length.
Match it to your Gripteck kit
The Gripteck size guide does the matching for you: pick your truck, type your measurement in centimetres, inches or feet and inches, and it shows the kit size that fits. Still not sure? Send us a photo of your truck bed on WhatsApp and we'll tell you.
